Big Bend Transit serves a wide range of riders across the Big Bend region through both paratransit and commuter programs.
For individuals who need nonemergency medical transportation or assistance due to disability, age, income, or other barriers, we offer paratransit services through two primary programs:
-
Medicaid Recipient Program – Provides eligible Medicaid members with transportation to covered medical appointments.
-
Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) Program – Offers low-cost, curb-to-curb service for individuals who cannot access other transportation options due to disability, income limitations, or lack of access to a vehicle. If you believe you may qualify for the TD Program, you can complete the Transportation Disadvantaged application here.
For those commuting to work—especially over longer distances—we also offer our Vanpool Program, a cost-effective rideshare option designed for daily commuters across the region.
Whether you need help getting to essential appointments or want a flexible, affordable commute, Big Bend Transit has a service to support your transportation needs.
-
Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) refers to individuals who, due to physical or mental disabilities, age, income limitations, or other factors, are unable to transport themselves or afford transportation. As a result, they rely on others to access essential services such as healthcare, employment, education, shopping, social activities, and other life-sustaining needs. This definition also includes children who are handicapped or considered high-risk, as outlined in Chapter 427, F.S., Rule 41-2, F.A.C.
If you believe you may qualify for the TD Program, you can complete the Transportation Disadvantaged application here.
Big Bend Transit’s Vanpool Program is a convenient, cost-effective option for commuters traveling to work or school in the Big Bend region. Typically, six to eleven riders share a van, splitting a low monthly fare that covers the van lease, fuel, maintenance, insurance, and other costs.
One person volunteers to be the primary driver/coordinator of the van, often receiving a discount on their monthly fee. Riders meet at designated pickup locations, such as Park and Ride lots, with drop-off points and schedules tailored to the needs of the vanpool group.
The program is open to daily commuters in the service area looking for a more affordable, environmentally friendly, and stress-free way to travel. Employers may also help offset costs through IRS-approved Commuter Choice programs. Call us or click here to learn more!
